Not everyone who has studied Pilates can be your Pilates trainer.  I say this based on considerable life experience.  I worked with seven different Pilates instructors before encountering Veronica Guadalupe.  Since then, I have worked with her for years.  Here's a quick summary of reasons why.

The big advantage of Pilates, I believe, is that it is endlessly customizable.  It can work toward broad, general goals, or issues specific to some single group of muscles.  Or both.  But you have to work with somebody who knows how to do that.  Some instructors seem to offer a very similar workout to all of their customers.  Some cannot articulate the reasons why they choose the exercises in your routine.

I am 76.  I have two legs with very different capabilities, due to injuries and surgeries.  They need different workouts.  But most instructors never asked or offered that.  I'm not sure that they knew how.

If you do Pilates for more than a few months, then what you can do will change. You need an instructor who can alter the workout as your body changes.  And it's more than the number of reps that will change.

Pilates moves can be complex, and difficult to get right the first time.  It's a whole separate skillset to observe a movement and describe precisely how it has to change to be done correctly.  It turns out that one of the ways to be good at this part of the training is to have studied ballet.  In that craft, people observe and correct movements over and over -- and they get good at that.  They can describe and demonstrate effectively.  Ms. Guadalupe is a prima ballerina and uses her ability to observe and correct quite effectively.  It's a huge time-saver.  She is also quick to get down and demonstrate a movement -- several times if necessary.  Trust me, not everyone will do that.

Okay, this next will seem trivial.  I think it is not.  Getting your body in better shape is a slow process.  Unless you're a kid in basic training, you won't get better so fast that your progress provides the necessary reinforcement.  Most of the Pilates pros I worked with were silent most of the time.  Others were praisers, but not very credible.  You need someone who can say, Okay, that time was better.  Did you see how it was different from the time before?"  Ms. Guadalupe has that knack.  Don't undervalue it.

One last thing to consider:  mechanical but important.  You lead a busy life.  So do the rest of us.  There will be times when you have to juggle schedules.  Ms. Guadalupe is very good at this appointment swapping.  Anybody can cancel.  The very best can fit you in, most of the time.  Don't abuse it, but be aware that the skill is there.

Thank you for your attention.

Veronica has been guiding me on my Pilates journey for 20+ years. She has a keen understanding of body mechanics. Her understanding of how the various muscle groups work together has been key in helping me loosen very tight muscles, deal with injuries, and undo kinks.  I continue to learn and relearn exercises and technique.

Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without Veronica. I am a few months away from turning 70 and I cannot imagine what my range of motion or mobility would be if I had not made the commitment to include Pilates in my body care regimen.  Pilates isn’t easy; it takes commitment and dedication. If you are willing to put in the effort your body will reap the rewards. Pilates is well worth the effort!

I started working with Veronica over a year and a half ago when I had a disc herniation resurface. Despite her busy schedule, once she heard about how much pain I was in, she found a way to work me into her already packed schedule. I was in considerable pain and Veronica has been invaluable in helping me relieve the pain and also improve my body conditioning to avoid reinjuring myself in the future. I have become a Pilates enthusiast and I see Veronica 2-3 times a week no matter what else I have on my schedule. Without Veronica I would still be in pain and I am forever grateful for her and her devotion to learning the correct way of doing Pilates and sharing her knowledge to improve the lives of others. She meets you where you are and helps you achieve your goals. She pushes you and encourages you and will put in the time and effort to work with you if you do the same. She's a badass.

I have been taking lessons from Veronica for about 6 years now. I had been in an accident two years before starting with her and suffered from thoracic back pain so bad I couldn’t perform basic functions. I had been through four rounds of physical therapy and several injections, and it only seemed to get worse with time. Then, in 2017, I was gifted a month of lessons and even though I was reluctant to go I couldn’t tell this person no. I was so afraid, moving my body hurt. I went because I had to, but then I kept going because I wanted to. Within that first year I was able to move without pain. It was a huge breakthrough both physically and mentally, and since then Veronica has proven over and over again that no matter what it is I’m facing, I can and will get better if I keep going to my lessons and keep listening to her.  Now, I am not just out of pain (most of the time), I am strong. I can lift and push and pull and live my life.  The other day an old friend asked me how my back was doing, and I had to stop and think – it is a non-issue now, but it used to dominate my life. This is just one example of many, many times Veronica has helped me heal my body. I don’t know where I’d be without Veronica, but I know it would be much less comfortable!

Mike, physical therapist and associate since 2004

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Veronica for a long time, beginning with my assignment as a staff physical therapist to Luna Negra and evolving into consulting and exchanging ideas on patient/client care. Veronica is a highly skilled practitioner, and she is deeply committed both to the health and well being of her clients and to her own personal growth and development. She possesses a keen understanding of the human body, of musculoskeletal dysfunction, and of faulty movement patterns, and with a discerning eye, she applies her knowledge in caring for her clients and helping them towards their goals. Having cultivated many professional relationships throughout the medical community, Veronica has well earned the trust and respect of other practitioners, and she is a valuable resource for clients looking for advise and direction outside the studio.

Katie, client since 2013

I can't even put into words how much Pilates and working with Veronica, specifically, has changed by life. Veronica is meticulous in her form and even after almost 10 years of working with her 2-3 times a week, I am delighted that I am still sore after our sessions, and she continues to advance me in Pilates practice. She has helped me feel my best through so many chapters of my life-- my wedding and three pregnancies, each of which was a c-section. She brought me back to a level of strength and fitness after each pregnancy that I never thought I could accomplish. She excels in physically restoring the body after a major change. After all these years of working with Veronica, I can undoubtedly say that she matches, if not surpasses, my own level of commitment and dedication to my physical goals.

Brian, client since 2003

"When I ruptured a disc in my back, the sciatica was so bad I could not put my right leg forward when walking. Twenty years of Pilates with Veronica has kept me pain free and enabled me at 55 to kiteboard with my adult children."

Cara, client since 2016

With her steadfast approach and inherent discipline to the fundamentals of Pilates, Veronica has taught me to strengthen my body and how to benefit from the intention of the exercises. She is keenly attuned to movement and building upon my work with previous instructors, Veronica has been most effective explaining which muscles to engage, how to activate them and clarifying the motivation behind the exercise. Furthermore, Veronica has helped me overcome injuries and increase my range of motion. With her knowledge and understanding of Pilates she can make an accommodation so as not to stress the injury while I still benefit from the exercise. She is simply an exceptional instructor.

Jen, client since 2016

I have been working with Veronica for about 10 years. I have back issues and last year I went through months of severe nerve pain and limited mobility with my doctor telling me I’d likely need surgery post a more sedentary life during Covid. Veronica was THE key to avoiding surgery and getting me to a place where I can move through life with limited pain. She is so knowledgeable about the body, always learning and broadening her skills, and she takes such an individualized approach to her teaching. Pilates with Veronica is a mainstay to maintaining my back and the rest of my body as mobile as can be.

Linda, client since 2022

"When I was first looking for a Pilates Class, it was important to me to have a reputable instructor who would work with me and personalize the instruction to my level of fitness. Veronica was that person. After one year the changes to my body have been remarkable; not just muscle tone and lengthening but how I move through my day. I barely recognize myself as I have changed my posture, breathing, thinking, and attitude. Thank you Veronica."
