What is Pilates? Pilates is a safe and effective form of exercise that strives for complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. It improves flexibility, builds strength, and develops control and endurance. Pilates is favored by many elite athletes—including professional dancers—and is often used to rehabilitate injured bodies. It was intended to be done one-on-one, so instructors could tailor exercises to the unique needs of each person’s body, but small groups and mat classes are also acceptable ways to practice the method. Consistency is key: many instructors recommend practicing Pilates at least three times a week to achieve the best results. What is Romana’s Pilates? Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates, a German-born gymnast, bodybuilder, and martial artist. Pilates emigrated to England in 1912. Shortly thereafter World War I broke out, and the British government sent German citizens like Pilates to internment camps. During his internment, Pilates began developing an exercise method which he called “Contrology.” After the war, he emigrated to New York City, and met his wife, Clara. Together he and Clara opened a studio to teach Contrology. Pilates’ method continued to develop over the years and eventually attracted numerous followers. Among them was Romana Kryzanowska, a dancer studying ballet with famed choreographer George Balanchine. Kryzanowska had a persistent ankle injury. Doctors wanted to operate, but Balanchine suggested something different: “I will take you to a good friend,” he said, “Joseph Pilates is a genius of the body.” Pilates prescribed a regimen of daily exercises. Within a week, Romana was ready to resume ballet and found that she was able to jump higher and move faster on stage than before. She continued working with the Pilates, whom she affectionately called “Uncle Joe” and “Aunt Clara.” They recognized that Romana had a special talent for the method, and she quickly became their chosen protégé. When Joseph Pilates died in 1967, Romana and Clara continued operating the studio together, and renamed the method “Pilates.” Romana continued directing the studio after Clara’s death in 1977. In the year 2000, the Southern District Court of New York ruled that the name “Pilates” was not a trademark and as a result the name was free for anyone to use—including instructors whose exercise methods bore little resemblance to the original method created by Joseph Pilates. Romana nevertheless continued teaching the true Pilates method and continued using the instructor certification program she had designed to ensure the work of her instructors remained as close to Joseph Pilates’ teachings as possible. True Pilates Chicago hires only instructors certified in Romana’s Pilates. All True Pilates Chicago teachers are in good standing and up to date with their Continuing Pilates Education as per the requirements of Romana’s Pilates International. About Us
Veronica Guadalupe
Owner
Veronica Guadalupe was certified in the Pilates method by Romana Kryzanowska in 2002.
Veronica’s goal is to promote the highest possible quality of life for every client who walks through her door by sharing the knowledge and experiences she has attained through Pilates.
Her first career was as a contemporary ballet dancer. She attended a performing arts high school and then spent the next 15 years dancing professionally with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Santa Fe Opera, Gus Giordano II, and River North Chicago. While dancing with Luna Negra Dance Theater for over 10 years, she also took on the position of Rehearsal Director and later became the Associate Artistic Director of the company.
Like any professional athlete, Veronica has had her share of injuries. Through these personal experiences, studies of Pilates and close relationships with physical therapists, she has gained valuable insights allowing her to address the needs of each client, as they deal with their own injuries, surgeries, and pain management, or simply to help them achieve better life goals.
Veronica began her Pilates education at a young age, eventually starting her formal training with Grand Master Teacher Juanita Lopez. She continues her Pilates education with Grand Master Teacher Sari Mejia-Santos, Anthony Rabara, Cynthia Shipley, Rhonda Celenza, and Maria Sison-Wright as well as many others in the Romana’s Pilates Community.
Tatiana Enders
Principal Teacher
From a very young age, Tatiana Enders, has studied movement through gymnastics, acrobatics, martial arts, and dance. Originally from Russia, Tatiana immigrated to the United States with her parents at the age of thirteen.
She was introduced to Pilates while a student at Northern Illinois University in a large mat class. She believes Pilates helped her in the healing and recovery of an anterior cruciate ligament tear.
Tatiana received her professional Pilates certification in 2014 from Romana’s Pilates Teacher Training Program in Evanston Illinois. She continues professional training with Grand master Juanita Lopez and Level II teacher trainer Rhonda Celenza in the hope of broadening her understanding of the Pilates method for the benefit of her clients.
Tatiana currently enjoys her life with her husband in suburban Woodstock, Illinois. Her other interests include yoga, rock climbing, hiking, nature photography, homesteading and medieval reenactment.
Liz Roberts
Principal Teacher
Liz has led an active and very interesting life. Having studied dance since childhood, she worked as a singer/dancer at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and Summer Stock after graduating college. Unfortunately, her ambitions as a performer ended when she broke her leg in a skiing accident in Aspen Colorado.
Other opportunities invited her to try different careers including: cooking with a caterer, and bookkeeping for a law firm. This involved being responsible for: accounts receivable and payable, and billing and payroll.
Browsing through a magazine one day, an article about Pilates caught her eye and intrigued her. It looked like a good way to help her husband who had been recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
She began studying Pilates at The Pilates Studio in Evanston with Juanita Lopez and was certified in 2000. She credits Pilates for keeping her active and healthy into her senior years.
